This bombproof, fireproof facility protects the nations most treasured documents. The methods used for storing the documents safely are nearly as interesting as the documents themselves. Sealed glass vaults are raised into the exhibition areas for viewing each day but sink back into safety each night. Here, you will find the most significant of our national documents – the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Among the other documents and artifacts housed here are copies of the Magna Carta and the Emancipation Proclamation, and the rifle used to assassinate John F. Kennedy. Admission is free.

Cool documents!

am-van's rating:

"We were lucky and only had about a five minute wait outside before being cleared by security and getting in. My daughter was so excited to go here and see the Declaration--she even made us watch the movie "National Treasure" to get us all hyped. It was really amazing to see the actual documents there. I never realized just how faded the Declaration is. The movie doesn't quite capture it. When I thought of what the Declaration and the other documents really mean to our nation I was awe-inspired. This was a fantastic visit and I'm sure I will be back again."

Long Lines

Reviewed by skbreads on April 25, 2007

skbreads' rating:

"We waited in line for 45 minutes before we even got in the door. You have to go through security and that take some time along with the fact that we were there first thing in the morning. These are historical documents and are very interesting. Once you are in the building, you have to wait again in line to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Do not bother going to the restaurant in the basement. It is slow and small."
