Summary of Phillips Collection

The Phillips Collection is more than just a killer collection of works by Renoir, Monet, Rothko, Klee, Picasso and Matisse; it’s also a good excuse to drag yourself away from the National Mall. Although the Mall is certainly one of the best spots in D.C. (ice skating, Victorian gardens and Seinfeld’s Puffy Shirt, all in one place), it isn’t the only spot. The Phillips Collection is located in one of the hippest neighborhoods in D.C.: Adams Morgan, near Dupont Circle. If you’re into art galleries, ethnic restaurants, funky bookstores and cosmopolitan nightlife, this is the spot for you. You can spend your day drinking in Impressionist masterworks, and your night drinking mojitos. When the Phillips Collection opened in 1921, it became the country’s first modern art museum. You’ll recognize many of the collection’s works, including Degas’ ballet dancers and Renoir’s boaters. For those who prefer their Impressionists, modernists, post-modernists and cubists undiluted by antiquities, the Phillips Collection will please.
