Visitors should come prepared for an experience likely to be disturbing and difficult to forget. At the start of the tour, each visitor is given an identity card of a Holocaust victim that matches the visitors own age and gender. Ordinary reality is skewed through off-center stairways, weird angles and the shadows of other visitors on the glass walkways overhead. An elaborate audio-visual display includes interviews, films and photographs. The Hall of Remembrance provides a calm, empty space at the end of the tour where one can reflect on the experience. The museum discourages children under 11 from attending. Free timed passes are needed to visit the permanent exhibit.

"This is a museum to put on the must see list. It is very thought provoking, but mentally tiring. We ordered tickets in advance on the web site but we did not need to, they were readily available. We were there three hours and that was about all we could do in one day. This is definitely not for children under ten or twelve. It is a self guided tour. Make sure to pick up the passport of one of the Holocaust victims. At the end of the tour, read the passport to see if they survived."

This place is very disturbing, yet, curiousness abounds...

"This was not an easy place to go to. I remember seeing it in SF, and I wanted to see it again in DC because some time had passed, and I couldn’t remember a lot of it. The images you see here are of Holocuast vistims, and the statues are so detialed, It leaves a rather grim view in your mind of what human nature can be like sometimes. I was in my twenties at the time, adn took the tour on my own. i did end up with a card of someone that had died around my age. It was very alarming to know people had died terrible deaths during this time in history, yet, something inside most of us wants to know what it was like. We heard the stories, and we wanted to see a piece of this history for ourselves. I went away for a deeper appreciation of what freedon means. It helps us see that our lives are always worth living. I cannot imagine all the deep tortues these people went though, but I can empathize for sure. "
