Foo Fighters lead singer and Northern Virginia native Dave Grohl founded Black Cat a decade ago, and it didn’t take long for this hipster haven to become the number one destination for D.C.’s burgeoning indie-rock scene. National bands fill the large main stage several times a week, while local acts play in the smaller downstairs space. But despite Black Cat’s commitment to live music, the biggest draws are the weekend dance parties, when DJs take over the main stage and artsy post-collegiates rock out to Britpop, ‘80s and alt-rock. For a more laid-back time, hit the bar in the red room, where no cover is required to play pool, or kick back with a nice selection of draught beers and unusually strong mixed drinks.
