Summary of Enid A. Haupt Garden
Rejuvenate in between museum stops with a visit to the Enid A. Haupt Garden. Located behind the Smithsonian Castle, the Enid A. Haupt Garden is a great place to stroll, lounge, veg out with your iPod or energize yourself with a latte. Stroll through the garden’s entrance of iron carriage gates and you might find yourself expecting to see women in bustle gowns, strolling beneath the shade of ruffled parasols. The garden is peaceful, pretty and absolutely free. Designed in Victorian style, you’ll see graceful touches such as old-fashioned lampposts hung with baskets of blossoms. Everything from the benches to the urns is designed and placed with an eye for what would have been done in the 1800s. The contrast between the Victorian-era garden design, with peaceful fountains and waterfalls, and the surrounding, post-modern architecture is both unexpected and pleasing. The garden’s location couldn’t be better. The garden is located on top of the Freer Gallery, in the National Mall. (It’s a rooftop garden, despite the fact that it’s on ground level.) You’ll find yourself just steps away from the National Museum of African Art and the Arthur Sackler Gallery, as well as the kite-flying, frisbee-tossing fun of the mall itself.
