The result of one man’s frustration in his search for savvy British gear on this side of the pond, The District Line was opened by owner Marshall Thompson with the goal of bringing Britpop sensibilities to the American masses. It seems to be working: After opening in 2005, the District Line already seems to have struck a chord with Washington’s Anglo-wannabe male population. These days it seems you can’t hit a bar or club in Northwest without spotting a hipster sporting the District Line’s trademark crest on his hat or lapel. Specializing in what Thompson calls “modern English fashion,” The District Line carries mostly T-shirts, jeans and sneakers imported from dandy lines including Fred Perry, Gola and Lonsdale, as well as the store’s own original designs. The selection is small, but the merchandise is constantly updated.
