La Mer Hotel, a Victorian conch house, was built in the early years of the 20th century, and the Dewey House, which was once owned by philosopher John Dewey, remained a private residence until quite recently. Set right on the beach, these B&Bs offer Queen Anne-style elegance and luxurious accommodations to ocean-loving individuals: You can actually smell the tangy salt air of the sea from the gardens, expansive porch and guest room balconies. The mustard-yellow reception area features polished wooden furnishings with simple lines and large glass-paned doors that open to face the beach. The island-inspired décor in the guest rooms is dominated by dark wood furniture and bright, tropical colors. Some have plush, quilted headboards and wooden ceiling fans while others include wrought-iron headboards, pastel walls and inviting balconies.
