When you think of Miami, your first thoughts may turn to the image it projects – a sun-drenched enclave where beaches, scantily cloud women, harried professionals, laid-back students, and exclusivity somehow co-exist. Miami certainly does play host to the jet set who make deals at Prime 112 and unwind at Crobar, but there’s much more going on here than high society. Miami is, in many ways, a Latin American city. As you drive into Miami, you’ll notice that many of the radio stations broadcast in Spanish. This trend strengthens as you enter and move about the city. Many newspapers are in Spanish, and perhaps half the inhabitants of Miami speak Spanish either as a second or a first language. Dusting off a phrasebook before you go isn’t a bad idea.
Miami is also a city of individualized neighborhoods. Little Havana, for example, could easily be mistaken for foreign soil. It is the preserve of the Cuban exile community, but also host to one of the world’s largest block parties, the annual Calle Ocho festival.
For clubs, boutiques, and fancy hotels, head over to South Beach. This is the Miami you’ve seen on TV or read about in tabloid magazines. Here are miles upon miles of beaches, ultra-trendy clubs, and yes, celebrities. Whatever it is that you decide to do in Miami, you won’t be bored. From museums to beaches, fine dining to exclusive shops, Miami always has a new thrill in store.
