Summary of Bass Museum of Art
Bass Museum of Art

In 1963, John and Johanna Bass bequeathed their fine art collection to the city of Miami Beach. The museum is housed in the building that used to be the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center; the original 1930 Russell Pancoast design has been drastically modified by Irata Isozaki. At its opening, this was the first public building in Miami with a fine art exhibition space. Currently, the museum complex includes a cafeteria, theater and lab where you can create your own computer-based art. The European masters from the 15th to the early 20th century are well represented, with a particular emphasis on Dutch and Flemish artists including Rubens and Jordaens. Peter Paul Rubens’ The Holy Family is here, as are dramatic floor-to-ceiling 16th century Flemish tapestries. Be sure to check ahead and see which special exhibitions are open. Past exhibitions have included themes as diverse as Marilyn Monroe photos, Egyptian mummies and Italian fashion.
