Summary of South Beach
If you’re in Miami and looking for a good time, head straight for South Beach, where there’s always something happening (and plenty of people to watch). Populated by a wide cross section of Miami’s citizenry, SoBe plays host to sun worshipers, models, the club crowd, college students, the under-employed, the over-employed and plenty of celebrities. The 10 miles of white-sand beaches are a big draw, too. SoBe teems with energy and thrives on trend. This is the home of ultra-exclusive nightclubs where sex is king and drinks don’t come cheap. Lounge on the beach and watch a procession of stunning, model-quality women and men walk past (Cameron Diaz is a regular, as is Jennifer Lopez). When the sun begins to overwhelm you, brush the sand from your skin and sip a mojito at a sidewalk cafe as cars that cost more than most people’s annual salary roll by. There’s another side to South Beach, aside from the hedonism. South Beach is also the home of the world-famous Art Deco District. So important are these Art Deco buildings that in 1979, much of South Beach was placed on the National Historic Register, protecting it from development. It is fitting that the exuberant style of this once ultra-modern architecture reflects the joyful attitude toward life that most residents here possess.
