Mark’s South Beach, a classy eatery at the heart of the SoBe scene, radiates upscale exclusivity. Founded by renowned local chef Mark Militello, it is a nautical-themed restaurant found right beneath the swanky Hotel Nash, which explains the abnormally low ceiling. The nautical theme is handled tastefully, with mahogany furnishings and linen wall coverings. Unlike other restaurants in the area, Mark’s isn’t overly concerned with the requisite airy outdoor seating, so the dining experience is more intimate, perfect for dates or post-business dinners. Celebs are rarely spotted, so you can focus on the food rather than the other patrons. One of the Militello trademarks is a fantastic wine list, and the ample and eclectic list at Mark’s South Beach is no exception. As with his Fort Lauderdale outpost, the wine list at Mark’s South Beach relies heavily on chardonnays, supplemented by Pacific Coast pinot noirs and sauvignon blancs from New Zealand. Most of the choices are priced at more than $50 per bottle, but for those who would prefer to sip by the glass, there are a good two dozen choices. The food is rich and complemented by exotic touches (cracked conch as ceviche, for example), prepared in an exhibition kitchen that hums with energy. The appetizers are particularly light and flavorful, and the pan roasted clams with chorizo are especially tasty. Entrees are also flavorful, but tend to be a bit heavier. The rack of lamb with endive and red wine earns consistent praise. Beef dishes are braised so that the rich juices enhance the flavor of accompanying organic vegetables. For those with a sweet tooth, many of the glazes and side dishes here will satisfy; the orange-cardamom glaze or the honey-roasted potatoes may take away your appetite for dessert. The dining experience at Mark’s South Beach is complemented by excellent service. An attentive waitstaff seamlessly helps you from one course to the next. The atmosphere here is fun and friendly, so leave your troubles at the door. If you need a little help getting to that relaxed state, you would be wise to try one of Mark’s martinis, among the best in the city.
