Sarasota, FL Summary
Sarasota photo

Overlooking Sarasota Bay, this city in west-central Florida, with a population of 52,500, is a popular resort and cultural, residential, and commercial center.

From 1927 through the 1960s, Sarasota served as the winter base for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. John Ringling built the causeway to St Armands and Lido Keys.

Of the 35 miles of beaches, Siesta Key Public Beach, Turtle Beach, and North Lido Beach are three of the most popular. The Sarasota Polo Club offers weekly polo matches during the winter.

The Ringling Museum of Art includes John Ringling’s residence, Ca’d’zan, a 32-room Venetian- Gothic mansion (which was built to resemble the Doge’s Palace in Venice), the Art Gallery, and Circus Galleries.

Nearby Myakka River State Park is a 35,000-acre wildlife area and breeding ground with hundreds of species of birds and plants. It also has alligators, deer, and raccoons. Lodging and dining options are available at all price levels.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport serves the area. However, fares are less expensive into Tampa International Airport.
