Murray's Cheese Shop

It’s hard to miss this cozy, Greenwich village shop: You’re greeted at the front door with pungent wafts of every cheese imaginable, from Gorgonzola and dry Spanish Manchego to tangy Bucheron goat cheese. Graze on their tasty samples and, well, it happens to everyone: You’ll become a full-fledged Murray’s addict. It’s not just the mind-boggling selection, but also the friendly, knowledgeable staff who are foodies just like me. On my last visit, I asked for recommendations on what to pair with a robust Chilean red wine I was serving at an upcoming dinner soiree. I walked out with not one, not two, but five incredible French and Italian selections that had my guests swooning. Perhaps best of all is that Murray’s doesn’t just ooze cheese, but history as well: It’s been around since 1940, sharing the aromatic and gastronomic pleasures of cheese with generations of New Yorkers.
