Climbing the 387 steps to the top of this masterpiece is well worth the effort for the spectacular view. Construction of the first great Gothic cathedral began in 1163 and was largely completed by 1212. The rebuilding of the two transept gates in 1270 marked its completion. The west face is adorned with three richly decorated doorways and crowned with two 69m towers. The cathedral is busy at the best of times; especially on Sundays, when much of the building is closed to visitors. Admission: cathedral is free, towers around EUR6.

Ya just gotta do it.

"That’s all there is to it. You just have to go. I took a break from my tour with Contiki to explore the city of Paris on my own, and of course I had to visit Notre Dame. The church is beautiful and listening to the bells is like hearing angels sing. Ok… maybe that’s going a little over the top. But it’s definitely a Paris must see. And if you’d like, step into the story of the hunchback and venture up to the bell towner. But be careful doing that… lot’s of winding stairs."

"The church is absolutely beautiful. The stained glass windows are beautiful, and the architecture is lovely. It’s one of the most beautiful churches in the world. I found it so peaceful to walk around inside, even with all the people. Everyone is whispering and there are candles lit, and it’s just really calm and nice. Another must-see in Paris!"

When in Paris, visit Notre Dame

"Really very breathtaking. It’s a thrill to see it in person and drink in the beauty of the architecture. Even the scaffolding on the outside when I visited, while an annoyance in pictures, hardly detracted from it’s awesomeness. Nearby, artists sell their wares."

How can you NOT go here?

"On my first trip to Paris, I found myself at Notre Dame every day. In the morning, to watch the crowd gather, and around 5 p.m. to hear the bells ring. This is the centre of France, literally. The mile 0 marker in the square in front of the cathedral is where all measurements in the country begin. Appreciate its many approaches…walk around the entire building…watch the tourists, locals and gypsies in the square…explore the aisles of the cathedral itself (but be discreet – don’t be one of the hordes of tourists that have to be ‘shushed’ because they can’t remember they are in a house of worship)...climb the towers (it’s worth the wait in line)...and visit the ancient ruins under the square. The tower and the archeological dig under the square are both on the Museum Pass. "
