This Romano-Byzantine basilica overlooks Montmartre, one of Pariss most picturesque districts. Its distinctive dome rising up over the rooftops, the basilica offers the perfect vantage point from which to survey the city. Inside, the mosaic of Christ and the crypt are of particular interest. Commissioned by the Catholic Church, construction began in 1875 under the watchful eye of architect Paul Abadie, and was finally completed in 1914. Admission: (basilica) free

Simply beautiful!

"Another symbol of Paris. The hike up was good exercise, that’s for sure! The view from the top is beautiful, and the building is beautiful. I loved the part in the “Amélie” movie where she leaves clues for the guy she’s in love with here. It is definitely worth the walk up (I didn’t know about the funicular!!) for such spectacular views and to see the church itself. Inside the dome of the church has an even more amazing view, in all directions!"

Gorgeous, but new

Loricat's rating:

"In a city filled with such ancient history, such monstrously complex gothic cathedrals, this modern basilica is very clean, and spare, in its details. But, that said, it is worth seeing…for the park that winds its way from the foot of the hill to the top, for the view from Sacre Coeur – atop Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, and for the Basilica itself. You can walk up, or take the funicular train (a good experience), tour the Basilica, appreciate the view, wander Montmartre, then, if you’re feeling daring, head over to infamous Pigalle, which is close by, to see the Moulin Rouge, and tour the Musee d’Erotique. "
