If you love old plans and archives, then this is the place for you! Started by Louis XVI, the collection of models and maps shown in this museum covers several centuries. The oldest model, representing the town of Perpignan, dates back to 1866. Note how towns and fortified areas have changed over the years. For reasons of National Security, this museum was not open to the public before the 1950s. It is also worth visiting Musée de lArmée and the Musée de lOrdre et de la Libération in Invalides. Admission: EUR6 for adults; EUR4 for students.

Part of the big picture

Loricat's rating:

"If you take this little museum in as part of your full tour of Les Invalides, and as part of your Paris Museum Pass, then add 1 or 2 stars, depending on how much you like maps. Otherwise, the trip here (on the Metro, and up the 4, or 5?, flights of stairs), and the dark, dismal dustiness of this attic museum may not be to your taste, and may not be worth the 6 Euros.BUT – once there, you are truly wandering the attic of the military might of France. Here are the detailed tabletop relief maps of major towns in France, maps used to plan out military campaigns. And the museum is kept dark and dusty to protect these fragile constructs, as light and habitual cleaning would damage them. "
