Built in what was originally a train station, the building itself is unique and interesting. The museum has an impressive art collection, which dates back to the early 19th century. It is however primarily known for its magnificent impressionist and neo-impressionist collection. The museum also strives to promote art by organizing festivals, special shows, exhibitions, conferences and concerts on a regular basis.

Musee d'Orsay = Love

"I cannot begin to describe how much I love this museum. As I was strolling through the brightly lit coves of the refurbished train station looking at the Academy paintings, I totally fell into a delusion of 19th century Paris. And while I contemplated all the Degas, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec paintings in the dim Impressionist exhibits, I totally lost my group. The best part of the museum--especially for the non-art fans is the rooftop view! Looking through the glass of the famous museum clock and seeing across the Seine at the Paris historical and government buildings (I think I see the Louvre too) is absolutely breathtaking. Overlooking this view on the roof alongside the grand goddess statues is amazing. My only regret is that I wish I had more time to spend there on my whirlwind Contiki two-week tour of Europe. [www.contiki.com]. This was my first time in Europe, so I'm really glad I booked a Contiki trip, since they took care of housing, transportation, excursions, and half of my food for me, so all I had to worry about was hitting the sights that I wanted to see, instead of worrying about what if miss the train tomorrow? Or what if all the hotels are overbooked tonight? "

A museum as beautiful as the work it houses

"This is quite possibly the most beautiful museum I have ever visited. While the Louvre has its own type of grandeur, Musee d’Orsay is unique in its train station turned museum architecture and interior. I understood better just how much I loved impressionist art, also, after visiting this museum. The one disappointment was that all of the Matisse art in the permanent collection was on loan for a travelling exhibit."

A must visit, even for art novices

"We loved the Musee d’Orsay, and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Paris. Start your visit on the fifth floor where they have the most amazing collection of Impressionist art, including Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, etc. Even art novices will recognize many of the paintings here. Plus the building, an old train station, has been very well restored. The halls on the lower floors are very spacious."

Don't miss this one!

"If the Louvre is the history of painting, then its neighbour across the Seine, the Musee d’Orsay, is the evolution of modern art. Again, the public is exposed to famous painting after famous painting, this time together in a broad and airy converted rail station.Have a leisurely lunch prior to entering through the side door, because of course you’ll have your Paris Museum Pass. But don’t be shy about paying the little bit extra for the special exhibits, if they sound interesting (I saw one on death masks), but only if they are really appealing. Trust me, there’s enough to see here finding extras! "
