In 1810, the Montrouge stone quarries became catacombs. Because of a lack of space in the graveyards of Paris, it is here, twenty metres underground, that the remains of millions of Parisians are exhibited. These ossuaries, illustrated by texts, create a chilling atmosphere and describe some of the events in the history of Paris, giving visitors substance for meditation. During the Second World War, this network of galleries was used as a hideaway for the Resistance movement; its vastness and the discretion of its entrances were great assets indeed.

Weird, but awesome!

"This was the weirdest, coolest thing I did in Paris! It was pretty cold and dark down in the tunnels, and, you know, the bones didn’t make it less creepy! All the skulls lined up, and the designs made were fascinating to see. It’s hard to describe what it was like, besides that it was definitely a teensy bit claustrophobic! But it was very cool, and different than what you’ll see anyplace else (unless you go to catacombs in other cities, of course!). Not what you usually associate with Paris!"

The Cold Smell of Death

Reviewed by demonpug999 on October 09, 2006

"Les Catacombs beneath the streets of Paris is by far one of the most eeriest places I have ever been to. You can almost smell the spirits as you walk down the winding stairs and into the massive catacombs. It was surprising cold and damp, and the walls of skulls almost seemed endless. Don’t worry you are not ALONE, there is people stationed at different checkpoint to ensure your safety. This place is not for the claustrophobic so if your scared of tight spaces or short ceilings don’t go down there. Some skulls are artistically placed into heart and cross shapes. The is also an array of Latin scripture for your enjoyment. Please do not attempt and try to steal bones, there will be a guard outside checking bags. Well have fun kiddies!!"
