Whether you are looking for vintage clothes, cheap ethnic goods, or genuine antiques, you’ll find strolling the 18 acres of the ancient Clignancourt flea market an adventure through a living museum. From the metro you head past the initial stands up to the rue des Rosiers, where you are likely to be dazzled by treasures that you are not likely to stumble over back home. The Vernaison market is the place for posters, textiles, chandelier bits, and small household goods, while across the street Malassis will please art deco fans. Further on, Biron caters to stars such as Andie MacDowell, Bruce Springsteen, and Liza Minelli with shops specializing in Lalique, silver, and gilded furnishings. Continuing down the street, hunt alongside professional antique dealers through the winding alleys of the Paul-Bert and Serpette markets. Shopping builds an appetite, and many visitors choose to head for the area’s only terrace at Chez le Mère Marie, or to Chez Louisette, where the accordion music and boisterous sing-alongs add to ambience of the day, evoking the Paris of Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf.

Loricat's rating:

"Doesn’t this thing have 6 stars?!? The Flea Market in the 18th arrondissement is out of this world. Once off the Metro, all you have to do is follow the bulk of the pedestrians a couple of blocks away to the outskirts of the 16-acre warren of streets, alleys, and arcades that constitutes the market. Don’t be fooled by the little gatherings of tents and trailers in the parking lots leading up to the real Market area, or the stalls that line the outer sidewalks – all selling the fallen-off-the-truck new merchandise common to flea markets around the world. Don’t be distracted – keep going deeper. You want the multitude of stores, alcoves, & warehouses selling the antique (or simply old) detritus of Paris. Old iron railings and lamps, toys, books, tables, and everything else under the sun.Browse for hours, and stop at one of the restaurants sprinkled throughout to refuel. And do pick up a brochure in one of the stores – it will have a map to help guide you. "
