High above Peachtree, nestled between steel and glass high-rises, visitors find something special: A building that houses some of Atlanta’s most elite travelers. The lobby soars with fashion-forward design, floored in teal and slate and dotted with elegantly curving seats. The Hyatt Regency’s blue dome is a landmark in downtown Atlanta. This is a place where business people and couples go for a quiet slice of the good life. Guest rooms are everything Zen; brushed silver handles on the dresser echo the unfussy lines of the carefully tucked beige and blue bed linens. This placidity doesn’t mean the Hyatt Regency can’t throw a fete, however. The city’s largest ballroom awaits inside, an industrial deco showpiece with ultra-modern curving aqua chandeliers and bright wooden pillars set into masculine geometries. Evenings mean food, and the Regency does it better than just about anyone else. Try the explosive seafood at Avanzare, home to a dancing 1,800 gallon saltwater tank. Or head on down to Parasol for Atlanta’s biggest collection of unusual spirits – over 200 in all, jiggered and garnished by a sexy duo of bartenders. The Hyatt Regency’s downtown location makes it easy to get out and about, whether you want to visit CNN Center, the Martin Luther King Center, or the hops in Underground Atlanta.

Hyatt Regency Atlanta - One of the city's major convention hotels, this Hyatt was designed in 1967 by famed Atlanta architect John Portman. With its innovative 23-story atrium lobby, it created quite a stir and was the prototype not only for future downtown hotels in the city, but also for hotel architecture throughout the United States.

Which tower are you in?

Reviewed by jn1234 on January 02, 2007

jn1234's rating:

"This hotel is difficult to review because it’s really several in one. I stayed there for a conference and my room was exactly what you’d expect from a Hyatt. However, I visited several other rooms that friends were staying in and couldn’t believe they were paying the same rate. If you’re in the wrong tower, you could end up with an oddly shaped room with no working space which is only slightly larger than a closet. It’s all luck of the draw, I guess."

An Architectural Masterpiece of the 1960's

Reviewed by Concierge on August 28, 2006

Concierge's rating:

"This is the hotel that changed everything. We’ve all stayed in an atrium hotel, and how many hotels now have revolving restaurants on their roof. Its all because of the HRA and Architect John Portman’s design. The design of this hotel is undoubtedly one of the cleanest purest simple I have ever encountered. But this is after all a Hyatt Regency. So expect the same thing you expect from every other Hyatt Regency around the world. This hotel is driven entirely by convention business so if your not there for a conference you’ll probably feel out of place. It ranks as a nice convention hotel for Atlanta third in line behind the Westin Peachtree Plaza and the Marriott Marquis. Whatever you do don’t eat there at the hotel. There are plenty of great restaurants in the area and throughout the city. The staff treats you as best as they can in a hotel with over 1,200 rooms. Its a perfectly acceptable place to lay one’s head but far from a glamorous one. To its credit, it has a great pool deck that is one of the most urban experiences in the city."

My favorite stay in Atlanta

Reviewed by road warrior on April 30, 2006

road warrior's rating:

"A couple years back I attended a business conference in Atlanta; the conference itself was a big yawn – endless meetings about nothing – but the hotel where it was held was fantastic, and I now stay here whenever I’m in town. Everything’s set up for banking guys like me, with a state-of-the-art business center that has all the bells and whistles plus high-speed Internet in the large rooms. In lots of other hotels, the “gym” is often small and impossible to find. Not here: The fitness facilities are a whopping 5,000-square feet, and they also lend out cool GPS armbands complete with digital maps, so I can track distance and heart rate when I go for a run, and then find my way back to the hotel with ease."
