Summary of Herndon Home
If you enjoy touring historical homes, the Herndon Home in Atlanta is not to be missed. Not only is the white-columned Herndon Home, built in 1910, an elegant National Historic Landmark, it is also a symbol of African-American achievement in the South. Alonzo Herndon and his family rose from slavery to achieve an incredible position of leadership and prominence in Atlanta — quite a feat for the early 1900s in the South. First as Atlanta’s premier barber and then as the founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Alonzo Herndon enjoyed great success with his businesses and became Atlanta’s first black millionaire. The Beaux Arts classical 15-room home was primarily designed by Alonzo’s wife, Adrienne, and encompasses various design styles. Check out the rococo details in the feminine and formal music room and the Renaissance revival design of the dining room. The home has the original furnishings — which make it that much more special — as well as decorative arts that the Herndon’s son, Norris, collected later on in Europe.
