Centennial Olympic Park, home of the 1996 Summer Olympics, made the news when a bombing occurred there during the games. It is located next to the Atlanta Civic Center, Georgia Dome, CNN Center, and Philips Arena, where the Hawks and Thrashers duke it out with pucks and sticks. Branching out from that area just a bit on Marietta Street, you can find Georgia State University, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and a plethora of restaurants. Check out the Rialto Center for the Performing Arts run by Georgia State University. Not only does it host performances in music and theatre, but it also rotates local art exhibits. As for music, the park is host to Music at Noon, where local bands perform in the middle of the day. And if you find yourself in Atlanta on the first Tuesday of the month, go to the park for a lesson in literature – NuSoul Concert is an outlet for musicians to perform as well as for poets to share their writings with the public. Surrounded by so many other interesting sights, Centennial Olympic Park may be easy to stroll right past, but don’t underestimate the allure of the dancing Ring of Fountains – they shoot water straight from the ground like miniature geysers and there’s even a fountain show four times a day. The fountains are the highlight of the park but the park itself is a secluded spot in the busy city and offers refuge from the rat race for locals and tourists alike.
