If you’re looking for an atmosphere with a touch of class without the pretension of an upscale shopping mall full of retail millionaire names, the Virginia Highland area is for you. Virginia-Highland is where money meets quirky to give you a blending of Atlanta’s culture. There are six “villages” in this historic location, which you can tour on foot or in a car. If you take it slow and meander aimlessly, you’re sure to enjoy the best part of the scenery – the eclectic groups of people like the ones who wear Gucci suits with Birkenstocks. You can shop for an obscure book in the stacks of the Atlanta Book Exchange, then collapse in a chair at San Francisco Coffee. If you’re not in the mood for a snack yet, check out one of the art galleries with exhibits from local artists. If you prefer trinkets to oil paintings, you could get lost in an antique store for hours by visiting Back to Square One or 20th Century Antiques, where you can find everything from folk art to 1950s-style furniture. Stop into Modern Primitive Art Gallery to see if the featured artist shares your taste in design – you may be able to pick up a handmade souvenir for your home. Find unique clothing or accessories at one of the many boutiques, such as Festivity or Mitzi & Romano. Looking for accessories not for yourself, but for your home? Enter Metropolitan Deluxe and walk downstairs for a look at some of the most stylish furniture the city has to offer. Once it’s time to eat, your options are greatly varied. The Highlander offers a large selection of imported beer, but their menu is, while extensive, limited to pub foods. If you’re in the mood for something a little more ethnic, have a seat at Surin of Thailand and sip on a Thai iced tea while you wait for your curried chicken with noodles and vegetables. Everybody’s Pizza has great subs, pasta, and pizza for very reasonable prices.
