When you ask a local to recommend a Waikiki hotel, there’s a good chance he or she will send you to the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel. The hotel is set on a stretch of sandy beach near Diamond Head. It’s also near Kapiolani Park, a 100-plus acre public space with an aquarium, tennis courts, performances, music and trails. Guest rooms have pale pine furniture, teal carpeting and brightly colored tropical flower arrangements. You’ll have a wonderful view from your lanai; choose between views of Diamond Head or Waikiki. The Kaimana Beach Hotel’s lobby is simple, but large sprays of tropical flowers remind you that you’re in Hawaii. Dine at the Hau Tree Lanai, the hotel’s beachfront restaurant, and you’ll see plenty of locals. Although they shy away from the crowds of Waikiki, the Hau Tree Lanai lures them out with local dishes such as poi pancakes.
