Kaneohe, HI Summary

This residential community with a population of 37,100 is on Oahu’s southeastern windward coast and overlooks one of the most beautiful bays in the Pacific, Kaneohe Bay.

At the bay there is a barrier reef, a hidden sand bar, and four islets, one of which appeared in the well-known 1970s television program “Gilligan’s Island.” From the shoreline, Kaneohe extends westward into the Koolau foothills. Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station is nearby, and the Hawaii Pacific University, Hawaii Loa Campus is located here.

The Valley of the Temples, near Kahaluu, has a replica of Byodo-In Temple of Equality, a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.

The Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens present an abundance of native flora and displays of the world’s tropical regions, featuring many rare and endangered plants. It has a lake, hiking trails, and a campground, and offers educational programs. Tram tours run through the five lush valleys of Senator Fong’s Plantation and Gardens, which features tropical flowers, ferns, fruit and nut trees, and the option to learn lei-making.

Windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking are extremely popular at the Kaneohe Beach County Park, around Mokapu Point, and at the Kailua Beach County Park. Snorkel or fishing charters depart from Heeia Boat Harbor.

The international airport and downtown Honolulu are about 30 minutes by car along Pali Highway. Several tour operators offer packages with transportation from Waikiki.
