Average barbecue

In a city known for its great barbecue, Hayward's is a disappointment. First, the highlights: The service is good, and their smoked sausage and sweet potato fries are both good. But beyond that, I'd rate this place average at best. The ribs and the brisket both were lacking in smokey flavor, and the combo plate was served covered in sauce, which makes me wonder what they're trying to cover up. There are many better places to go in the K.C. area.
