Summary of Buckingham Fountain
A beloved Chicago landmark and a favored postcard subject for nearly 80 years, Buckingham Fountain continues to draw visitors daily for its renowned displays. Inspired by the gardens at Versailles and constructed of Georgia pink marble and patina-coated bronze, the fountain holds 1.5 million gallons and uses 134 individual jets to move all that water. Still, the only Buckingham Fountain math you really need to know is that every hour on the hour, a 150-foot column of water appears over the center of the fountain. Beat that, Old Faithful. During the fountain’s on-season (April through November), light shows and music accompany the water display after dusk. Be prepared to peer through the crowds to catch a glimpse of these shows; Buckingham Fountain’s fame and convenience make it a top attraction on everyone’s list, vacationers and residents alike. While you’re waiting in the summer heat for the hourly blast, be sure to stand downwind and brace yourself for the best cool-down since the sprinkler in your front yard.
