Hancock Tower and Observatory

Chicago is the town that gave birth to the world’s first skyscraper, in 1885, and since that time, things have just gotten taller. Of the city’s giants today, the 100-story Hancock building is not the tallest, but it has the best location — perched near the shore of Lake Michigan, at the head of a long sweep of lakefront parks, at the north end of Michigan Avenue. It also offers several options for enjoying the splendid view. However, while you’re still on the ground, take a moment to look up — this is a really tall building. Then head for the elevators. If you want an unobstructed, 360-degree view, zoom to the Hancock Observatory (your ears will pop), 1,000 feet up. The building sways slightly in the wind, so if you feel like you’re still moving when you get off the elevator, it’s not an illusion. Far below, gardens and beaches spread northward, the lake is to your east, and some of Chicago’s most impressive rooftops are at your feet. But say it’s evening and you’re looking for something more than just a nice view. Try the cocktail lounge on the 96th floor. You can’t see full circle on this level, but a good drink and comfy chair compensate. Or head for the Signature Room, which, on the 95th floor, is the highest high-end dining establishment in the city.

Great view

"We prefer the Hancock Tower Observatory over the Sears Tower. It’s right on Michigan Avenue, houses one of our favorite restaurants, The Cheesecake Factory and has many interactive displays in the Observatory. Be sure to go on a clear day. Last time we went it was snowing and visibility was limited."

overpriced-- but great views

"Mesmerizing views of the Loop area and Lake Michigan. Costs more than it should. Audio guide is available. Short open-air (screened & perfectly safe) walkway, but most of the room is behind glass and climate controlled."

Great views

"In my opinion, skip the Sears Tower in favor of the Hancock Tower. You can get a drink at the 96th-floor bar, the Signature Lounge. No cost to go up in the elevator (except for the outrageously priced drinks, of course), and you still get an amazing view. Biggest perk – the bathroom (the girls’ one, at least). Walk out of your stall to a floor-to-ceiling window that looks out 96 floors below."

Hancock Observatory - The view from the top of Chicago's third-tallest building is enough to satisfy, but some high-tech additions to the experience include "talking telescopes" with sound effects and narration in four languages, history walls illustrating the growth of the city, and the Skywalk open-air viewing deck -- a "screened porch" that allows visitors to feel the rush of the wind at 1,000 feet.
