The Art Institute of Chicago review

shopgirl's rating:

"Some museums put on airs, which can be intimidating, especially for newbie art lovers. The Art Institute of Chicago, however, offers a refreshing change of pace, with an accessible, friendly environment designed to make patrons feel very much at home. Its roots have a lot to do with this: The Art Institute of Chicago was founded as a school and a museum, so the emphasis is both on enjoyment and education. I rank the Institute’s collection as one of the finest in the U.S., as it spans an impressive array of genres, styles and centuries. As much as I’d like to peruse every wing, I usually focus on my favorites – the Georgia O’Keefe collection being one – and on the temporary exhibits, which have a strong reputation for showcasing acclaimed emerging artists. When you’re in the O’Keefe wing, don’t miss her surreally beautiful “Red and pink rocks with teeth” or the haunting “Cow’s Skull with Calico Roses.”"
