The Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park is a concert hall that happens to be located outdoors. It’s also a work of art in its own right, and you’ll be happy to have seen it whether attending a performance or not. The pavilion was designed by Frank Gehry, and the stage is crowned by ribbons and sails of stainless steel that will remind you of Gehry’s other famous designs, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The pavilion has 4,000 fixed seats, and the lawn can hold an additional 7,000. It’s all covered by a massive steel trellis that supports a state-of-the-art sound system, delivering near-concert-hall quality sound. Best of all, the concerts and events held are free. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn while listening to the symphony, join the faithful for the Gospel Music Festival, or enjoy Family Fun Week.
