Located in one of Chicago’s great landmarks — the elegant, 1890s McCormick mansion — Lawry’s the Prime Rib is the ideal place for a special occasion or a meal with an important client. The glorious setting, with its sweeping stairways, high ceilings and 100-year-old crystal chandelier in the lounge, is impressive, but the restaurant still manages to be comfortable. The food is equal to the elegant interior, with some of the best prime rib you’ll find anywhere. Of course, if you don’t want meat, you can order fresh fish or lobster, but the menu’s focus is the different cuts of roast beef available. The prime rib, which is carved tableside from huge, domed trolleys, comes with Lawry’s spinning salad bowl, Yorkshire pudding, perfect mashed potatoes and whipped-cream horseradish. Additional sides worth considering include Lawry’s creamed spinach or fresh asparagus with béarnaise sauce. If you can, save room for the famous “chocolate bag” dessert.
