In the classic Fred Astaire film “Silk Stockings,” a group of bumbling Kremlin agents are seduced to the West in part by memories of foods they loved in pre-Soviet Russia: borsch, beef Stroganoff, blinis with sour cream. Well, if you want to experience a similar seduction, Russian Tea Time is the place to do it. Offerings range from specialties of the Czar’s court to homey favorites from former Soviet republics. Plump dumplings are drizzled with butter and stuffed with pumpkin, asparagus, potato, or ground beef and onion. Carrot salad and beet “caviar” are must-tries. Hearty main courses include beef Stroganoff, wild game sausage served with Russian-style potatoes, Moldavian chicken meatballs, and stuffed cabbage (golubtsi). If you’re having trouble narrowing your choices, there are combination platters that feature several dishes. This is not a place for light meals, though there are vegetarian options. Of course, because it’s Russian, you can get caviar and vodka (would you believe vodka flights?). The décor is comfortably Old World (with lots of red, of course), and the wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Plus, the restaurant’s location is ideal: less than half a block from the front door of the Art Institute and around the corner from Orchestra Hall and Loop theaters.
