The Sixth Floor Museum

A must see in Dallas

If you have any interest at all in history, don't go to Dallas without visiting the Sixth Floor Museum. I didn't know much about the museum before I got there and was truly expecting some rinky-dink exhibit with a few random relics from the time of the JFK assassination. I ended up staying there for about three hours. There are an unbelievable number of photographs and objects on display in what is actually a two floor space. The sixth floor is the permanent exhibit devoted to telling the story of the days leading up to, including, and following the assassination as well as JFK's life generally. The seventh floor is for special exhibits. When I was there in late April 2007, it focused on the role of Dallas law enforcement at the time of the assassination. You can see the place where the shots were fired from as well as the where the rifle was found. Archival footage of everything from the assassination itself to recordings of the news announcement of the President's death are available. The museum also wisely includes information acknowledging the many conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination. Go to the Sixth Floor Museum first. Then wander outside around outside in the Dealey Plaza area to put everything you've learned in context. If you go the Dallas Visitor and Convention Center Web site, you can also get a $2 coupon off admission.

Thanks for this nice photo, my husband was here in March '07; this was his Tx highlight. I decided 20th century history was not quite old enough for me so I enjoyed those four hours sight seeing, photography and a brilliant Tx lunch rather peacefully. I must say I did finally find and purchased the 'T' shirt that I liked with words 'My 1st Tx T shirt' at junior price.
