Meridian Hill Park
pretty park
This is one of my favorite places in DC. It looks a little drab in the winter months, but once spring comes it’s a real gem. At the north end of the park are grass lawns lined by tall trees and you’ll often see people playing soccer. The lower half of the park is centered on an impressive cascading fountain. Several statues are in the park, including one of Joan of Arc. The park is on 16th Street NW which at one time was promoted as a location for the Prime Meridian, thus the name. The park, along with the surrounding neighborhoods, has undergone a major recovery effort in recent years. A local neighborhood group has won a battle to rid the park of drugs and other criminal activity for the most part. The location provides great views and it’s a favorite spot of some people for viewing 4th of July fireworks. The park’s a bit off the beaten path, but if you’re visiting DC on a nice day it’s worth a stop by to check out the view, take some photos and maybe have a picnic.
