Lebanon is off US-65, 55 miles southeast of Louisville in central Kentucky. Its National Cemetery was built in 1863 to bury the dead from the Perryville Battlefield; Kentucky veterans of twentieth-century wars are also buried there. Guided tours are available with advance notice. The Lebanon Civil War Park has a memorial to Major-General George H. Thomas, “the Rock of Chickamauga,” who led Union forces from Lebanon to the first major Civil War battle in Kentucky, at Mill Springs, in January, 1862.
The Historic Homes and Landmarks Tour shows historic sites, particularly homes having to do with the Civil War. The William Clark Quantrill Driving Tour features sites relating to Quantrill, who led a Confederate guerilla force that conducted savage raids on pro-Union communities in the border states.
Closest public transportation is in Louisville, which has an international airport, trains and buses.
