Famous for its impressive abundance of horse farms and whiskey distilleries, Lexington is geographically defined by rolling green hills and magnificent oak trees. The city is known as the horse capital of America. There are dozens of horse farms in the area, two of the most popular being Calumet and Claiborne Farms. Calumet Farms has a history of producing a large number of Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winning horses, and Claiborne is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Seabiscuit.
For whiskey lovers, Lexington is home to many of the world’s top distilleries including Wild Turkey and Maker’s Mark. One of America’s most distinguished whiskeys, Maker’s Mark’s distillery is open seven days a week. In addition to exploring the facilities, visitors to the Maker’s Mark distillery can even dip their very own bottle. Be sure to plan your trip between Monday and Saturday – liquor isn’t sold anywhere in Kentucky on Sundays!
You’ll also want to stop in one of the town’s legendary jazz clubs. If you’re looking for a scrumptious combination of local cuisine and music, the Cheapside Bar & Grill is an excellent place to find it. A local favorite, Cheapside Bar & Grill features a wide variety of mouth-watering dishes served up with a side of spicy live jazz.
