Airfare vs. Train fare

It's surprising that airfare is now cheaper than train fare.  I recently went from NYC to Washington DC and the train costs twice as much as the plane.

If you plan on going somewhere soon (within the next month), you go to Amtrak and look under Hot Deals and then Weekly Specials, you can find fares up to 70% off.  This works if you are flexible and want to go somewhere soon.  Doesn't work if you are planning a ways out.  Then the fares can be astronomical!

I think it's because there is so much more competition between airlines, since there are so many airlines, but almost no competition for trains. Well, you'd think all the airlines would be a competition for trains, but it doesn't seem like it! I think the government may subsidize air travel and help out the airlines more, too, but I'm not sure about that.

It's such a shame, because the train is about a thousand times better for the environment than an airplane!
