Looking For the Truth
Sometimes I wonder if people are hired to write phony reviews for hotels, restaurants, or other things. I was recently looking at some hotel reviews. Some of the reviews for the same hotel are so inconsistent with ratings ranging from very high to very low. I would expect that reviews concerning the staff of the hotel would be the most different since visitors do not encounter the same staff, especially at bigger hotels. But, at the smaller or average sized hotels I would expect the visitors to come across the same staff. I also am curious about the race of the reviewer. If some people on the staff are racist, then I would expect very different reviews. My biggest concern is how clean the rooms are. I figure that this aspect should be fairly consistent among reviews since there are less factors to consider when determining if a hotel is clean or dirty.

The comments about a place being clean or dirty are only consistent if the hotel in question is consistent. If they never clean the dump, all of the reviews will say so, but if it's scattershot-sometimes they crack down and clean for a week or so, but mostly they don't-you can't expect the reviews to be consistent, either.
Sometimes I wonder if hotel managers don't log onto sites like this one and give themselves rave reviews to balance out the complaints from real customers.

I wonder sometimes, too! I stayed at two hotels in Malaysia that had gotten good reviews on the sites where I checked, that were reaaaaally run-down. One was supposed to be a 4-star hotel, and I think it wasn't more than 2, max. I came home and re-read the reviews, and I was just shocked by how good they were!
I don't think racism is a big problem with hotels- first, hotel staff would probably get fired pretty quickly if they were rude to guests, and most hotels get people from all over the world staying there, so any racist actions would quickly be noticed.
