Bossier City, with a population of 53,000, is situated close to the Texas border in the state’s northwestern region on the Red River, a natural boundary that separates the city from neighboring Shreveport.
A major transportation route, Bossier City sits at the junction of I-20 and I-49.
For a city that started out as a cotton plantation in the 1830s, Bossier City does not reflect its nineteenth-century beginnings. In 1925, a terrible fire largely destroyed its downtown district; however, Bossier City’s oil-based economy remained intact. In 1928, an Air National Guard squadron set up camp, expanding into Barksdale Air Force Base. The Air Force is now the primary focus of the town.
Bossier City’s downtown region straddles the riverfront. The district features several modest attractions and recreational gaming at its three gambling riverboats. It is a pleasant area to stroll around and an interesting one to watch, including the blazing neon that splashes the Texas Street Bridge. The Spring Street Museum displays Bossier City’s local artifacts.
Both Bossier City’s local colleges contribute their fair share to the city’s cultural attractions. The liberal arts school of Centenary College houses the Meadows Museum of Art, and Louisiana State University features a fascinating living history museum.
The attraction that offers the most fun is in nearby Shreveport, the Ark-La-Tex Antique and Classic Vehicle Museum; also there is the Sci-Port Discovery Center, which science buffs will enjoy.
Greater Shreveport Airport and buses service bustling Bossier City.
