For lavish period décor, the 100-year-old Le Pavillon is a fantastic choice. Louis XV would feel at home in the lobby, replete with ornamental gold detail, chandeliers from Czechoslovakia and original 18th-century paintings. Like the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, this is the place modern courtiers strut their stuff. Guest rooms exude old-time elegance with rich jewel-tone colors, crown molding and polished carved wood furnishings. Relax on the rooftop along the perimeter of the heated pool, or head down to the lobby for a nightly Le Pavillon tradition: complimentary peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, milk and hot cocoa. The elegant Crystal Room serves classic cuisine, while Le Gallery, with its low marble parapet and green onyx accents, is a good place to enjoy a refreshing drink after a day spent exploring the historic French Quarter.

"What a gracious and beautiful hotel! I stayed there post-Katrina, so their Southern hospitality may have come from gratitude that someone was visiting. But the lobby is spectacular, the room was not large but very lavishly furnished, and the service was impeccable. One caveat: I had been to New Orleans pre-Katrina, and was surprised by the lack of foot traffic in the couple of blocks between the hotel and the French Quarter now. As I was travelling alone, I was not comfortable walking those couple of blocks after dark and chose to take a cab."
