Mother’s, a dive-turned-New Orleans institution, specializes in drippy, dense po’ boys, served up cafeteria style by less-than-perky employees. Your real mother might tell ’em to mind their manners, but with po’ boys this sweet, you can tolerate the lackluster service. There’s always a line and a lack of tolerance for questions, so just order the Ferdi special and be done with it already. Crusty French bread is stacked with baked ham, roast beef scraps soaked in gravy, cabbage, mustard, pickles and about a half jar of mayo. Skip the sides and have yourself a piece of sweet potato pie. You’ll find yourself elbow to elbow with the fanny-pack-and-sneakers crowd, smoking construction workers and the NOLA police department. They’re all here for the same reason: There’s nothing like Mothers’ home cookin’.
