Disturbing

I can’t believe the Red Light District has a website! Wow!

I first went to Amsterdam when I was 9 years old. It seems to me that there were sex shops everywhere then! I don’t know if my little mind is remembering wrong, or if they’ve cleaned the city up a lot, but there definitely aren’t as many now! The only place I saw them was the Red Light District, which you might walk through by accident while walking through the city. I thought this was a sad area to see. You see that most of the women in the windows are immigrants, who probably had things really badly in their home countries, and didn’t have much choice if they wanted a better life. Just because prostitution is legal in the Netherlands doesn’t make it a great career choice. It’s disturbing to see the older men going into the houses where these mostly young girls are working. Plus it felt wrong that I was walking through at all, like it’s some sort of tourist attraction (which I guess it is, if it’s listed here and has a website!). At the same time, it’s good that it’s in the open and that the women are kept safe. & it’s just really interesting to see something so different from most countries. So I don’t know that I’d recommend that anyone go see this, but… I don’t know. It’s interesting, anyhow!
