People's Park

People's Park

The land where People’s Park is was bought by UC Berkeley in the 1960s, and then reclaimed by the people in 1969. They cleaned the lot up, planted a garden, and made it a space where everyone could go and relax. Then the university wanted the land back, and it turned into a huge confrontation between students, people who lived in the area, and the National Guard. It made national news, and is one of the famous protests of the ‘60s. In the end, the park stayed. Today it is a haven for homeless people, and there is a small garden, basketball courts, and a stage for performances. Next to the park is a huge mural depecting the 1969 protest which is really nice. It’s interesting to see the park today if you’ve read about the history of the place.
