Valborg

Labor Day is on May 1st in Sweden, and on that day, University choirs sing, and people join demonstrations, mostly for Socialism and against Capitalism. Labor Day was the first non-Christian public holiday in Sweden, and the only one until 2005, when Sweden's National Day also became an official holiday.

On April 30th is another holiday- Valborg. It's a combination of Pagen Spring celebrations and Viking Fertility celebrations. Mostly, it just seems like a reason for people to go to a park and drink, especially university students and young people. There are also large bonfires at night, and parties all through the night. It's one of the biggest celebrations for students. It usually starts in the morning, when people take a picnic and blankets to their local parks. Then, the day is just spent eating, drinking, singing, and visiting with people. In University towns like Lund and Upsalla, there are also early herring or champagne breakfasts at some of the student houses, and competitions between some of the student organizations. I'm not sure exactly what goes on in towns without a major university!
