Souvenirs!
What kind of souvenirs do you usually buy from a place? Is there something you collect that you try to find in every place you go? Or do you try to get something unique from every place? What are the weirdest souvenirs you've ever gotten?
I try to get my parents a gift wherever I go, but I usually don't find anything for my dad, and only sometimes something for my mom. Most places just have really cheap, crappy plastic souvenirs that I can't imagine anybody would actually buy! I usually just stock up on postcards, to send and to keep as a memento.
Some of the stranger souvenirs I've gotten: In Thailand, at the end of a snorkeling trip, they had put our picture from the morning onto a plate. It was so weird, useless, and cheap, that I couldn't resist! In Japan, I got a bag with a picture of a 20-foot long tapeworm on it from the Parasitological Museum! I also got plastic anatomy models from a vending machine in Akihabara. I study medicine, so they were awesome!

I always try and find something "unique" to the area. Like pottery made near there (a locally made item) or even a local food item. Something that is unique to the place and reminds me of there.

a 20-foot tapeworm? Ick.
I like books – guides to museums etc. I used to have a big postcard collection. Masks, neat sculpture, folk art.
Weird…In Korea, have you seen the handkerchiefs with the printed map of the tourist sites in the town? When I first saw them, I laughed – how truly useless, as a map, and as a hanky ('cause since it's a souvenir, would you really use it?). So I of course started collecting them, everywhere I went!
I totally started a hankercheif collection, too! HAHA! But then I stopped finding them anywhere! NO Hankies!! I have two washrags from Japan, too!

I always get a christmas tree ornament from wherever I go. That way when we doecorate for the holidays I always think back to good memories of where I traveled to the past year.
