Camden (population about 5,060) is a busy resort town 100 miles northeast of Portland on the Atlantic coast. There is good shopping here and the restaurants are known for their tasty chowder and seafood pies. Many yachts, schooners, and a fleet of windjammers (originals and replicas) are based here on Penobscot Bay.
Visitors are likely to see at least one of these elegant boats on the harbor at any time during summer.
Many cruises on these stately boats, to offshore islands, run from here. Five miles north of Camden, in Lincolnville, reasonably priced ferries run to Isleboro Island across the bay. The trip makes a good day out in fine weather, providing an impressive view of Camden from the water.
Just north of town is the Camden Hills State Park. It has 25 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. You can hike or drive up Mount Battie and look down over the harbor.
Camden is almost midway between Bangor and Portland international airports.
