Gertrude’s is John Shields’ restaurant at The Baltimore Museum of Art. Opened in October 1998 after a complete renovation of the existing space. The interior, labeled gorgeously sophisticated by a local restaurant reviewer, is inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay: there are gold-colored plaster molds of crabs, herons, terrapins (turtles) & fish mounted on the wood paneled structural columns in the otherwise open space; the center of the ceiling is lit by fiber-optic lighting patterned after constellations; sails appear to billow over the bar area; and photographs by David Harp depicting life on the Chesapeake adorn an entire wall in over-sized frames. Gertrude s serves Chesapeake Cuisine. We dish up a menu of regional foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and a very-popular-with-the-locals brunch menu. "I went here with some friends for their Tuesday night special were they have $10 and $12 entrées from the regular dinner menu. The place was very nice and the decor was perfect.I started with the Cream of Crab Soup with lump crab and scented with sherry (normally $6 for a cup but Tuesdays it $4). I had the Portobella Crab Imperial-grilled marinated portobella mushroom piled high with crab imperial and served with savory rice (the rice needed more flavor) and vegetables (normally $24 but Tuesday it $12. For dessert we split the Bread Pudding which was the BEST I have ever had!The other people tried: The crabcake platter for $18 (they have a special platter for $12 on Tuesdays)A Berry Good Salad $10- field greens, fresh berries, goat cheese, toasted pistachios & a berry vinaigretteTurkey Meatloaf Platter (normally 16 but it was 10)-fresh ground turkey with red peppers, garlic & parmesan cheese, served with a roasted tomato sauce, mashed potatoes and sauteed veggiesDinner was great and the outdoor seating was perfect looking. I really suggest making reservation (they are on opentable.com)I will be going back! I suggest everyone to try it!"
