Although its name conjures up images of paintings and sculpture, the Museum of Fine Arts is, and has, far, far more: decorative, primitive and ancient arts, furniture, architecture – you name it and this museum probably has it. The collections are well organized, so if ancient Egypt is your passion, you can head straight to the mummy cases and faience hippos, then compare it to other ancient cultures in gallery after gallery of Greek, Roman, Phoenician and other artifacts. Especially strong in Asian arts, the museum contains knockout collections of everything from Chinese funerary art to early Persian inlay and the best collection of Japanese prints outside Japan. The MFA was the first art museum to establish a department for textiles and fabric arts, and it has continued to lead in this area. Move through the galleries to discover English silver, Gothic sculpture, Art Nouveau furniture, art glass, Mayan ceramics, ancient American gold work and early musical instruments from all over the world. Of course the museum has the expected paintings and sculpture: the finest collection of Monet works outside Paris, and one of the best collections of French Barbizon, Impressionist, and post-Impressionist paintings outside France, with works by Corot, Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Renoir, Gauguin, and Matisse. Don’t even try to see all this in one visit.

"A great place to spend some time, if you are from area you can often get free passes from your local library. They always have a rotating exhibit (one year they had a room that was supposed to evoke the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and you could put on waders to walk through it. Another time the whole room was orange and fuzzy). My personal favorites are the temple rooms and the painting “Watson and the Shark”. The Egyptian room is very very very popular, especially with the younger set. Lots of places to sit down, a good cafe, and a large bookshop round out this museum. Wednesday nights are free, though they won’t refuse a donation. "
