Brockton, a suburb south of Boston with 92,800 residents, was settled in 1700, but it didn’t incorporate as a city until 1881. A shoe manufacturing center in the nineteenth century, its economy is now diversified among 200 manufacturing, health-care, and distribution businesses. The city has a community college, a symphony orchestra and the Fuller Museum of Art. The city is just east of Hwy 24.
