Cambridge, MA Summary

Cambridge is one of Greater Boston’s most distinguished cities. Named after the city in England from which its founding fathers hailed, Cambridge is a sophisticated town in every sense of the word. Despite its demure size (6.5 square miles), the city of Cambridge manages to pack in as much excitement and culture as mega-metropolises twice its size. Although it is geographically stunning and historically rich, Cambridge is primarily celebrated for the impressive academic institutions to which it is home. Harvard is located in Cambridge, and its esteemed presence here enhances the city’s reputation as the “smartest place in America.” The prestigious M.I.T. also calls Cambridge home.

Harvard Square is very popular among tourists, natives and students alike. Just outside of Harvard Yard, Harvard Square offers an exciting collection of delicious restaurants, taverns, bookstores, museums and retailers. Harvard Square features the Cambridge signature red-brick walkways and many historical buildings. As far as historical museums go, Cambridge can’t be beat. The city’s Fogg Art Museum, for instance, is Harvard’s oldest art museum (it opened to the public in 1895) and features spectacular artwork varying in style from Renaissance to 19th century French art. Although the museum is open daily, don’t plan a visit before checking for special exhibit announcements.
